Inhabitation in Nepal probably started with inhabitation around the Kathmandu valley. The fertile soil in this region facilitated human population that gathered around it since earliest days. Modern Nepal is an amalgamation of a number of principalities that were independent entities in the past before the campaign of national integration launched by Prithvi Narayan Shah in the Kathmandu Valley. The period between 1846 and 1951 is generally described as the dark period in the history of Nepal, the period when the hereditary Rana prime ministers ruled the country despotically.
