History of Nepal

Nepal has a long glorious history. Its civilization can be traced back to thousand of years before the birth of Christ. It can even be said that history of Nepal is as old as the Himalayas. But according to best recorded facts History of Nepal started around 800 B.C, and the distinguished period of rules are demarcated as:

Kirat Period (800 B.C.-300 A.D.)

Lichhavi and Thakuri Period (300 A.D.- 1200 A.D.)

Malla Period (1200 A.D. – 1769 A.D.)

Shah Period (1769 – present)

Inhabitation in Nepal probably started with inhabitation around the Kathmandu valley. The fertile soil in this region facilitated human population that gathered around it since earliest days. The place has been a hub for cultural and political matters in Nepal’s history. The trans-Himalayan trade route that crossed through the valley brought a great deal of wealth and recognition for the area.

Modern Nepal is an amalgamation of a number of principalities that were independent entities in the past before the campaign of national integration launched by Prithvi Narayan Shah in the Kathmandu Valley. The Malla kings, whose contributions to art and culture are indeed great and unique, ruled it. As the popular legend goes, the original settlers of the Kathmandu Valley were the Gopalas, Mahisapolas and Kiratas, later succeeded by the Lichhavis, who in turn were succeeded by the Thakuris Mattas. 

In 1768 the Shah dynasty ascended the throne or the unified Kingdom. The present King of Nepal, His Majesty King Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev, is the tenth King in the Shah dynasty. The period between 1846 and 1951 is generally described as the dark period in the history of Nepal, the period when the hereditary Rana prime ministers ruled the country despotically. As a result of the popular revolution of 1950-51, headed by the then reigning monarch.
